Essential oil dilution basics: drops and percentages
A dilution ratio is not one fixed answer. It is three variables working together — understand them and you can work any volume out yourself.
This article is general aromatherapy record-keeping and safety material, not professional medical advice.
The three variables
Dilution involves exactly three variables: the carrier oil volume, the target dilution percentage, and how many oils go into the blend. Volume sets the total drop count, the percentage sets how much of that is essential oil, and the oil count decides how those drops are split.
Take 30 ml of carrier oil at 2% across three oils: 12 drops in total, 4 drops per oil.
Turning that into drops
The usual approximation is about 20 drops to a millilitre, so total drops is roughly volume in millilitres × 20 × the dilution percentage.
It is an approximation. Oils differ in viscosity, droppers differ in bore, and the same drop count will not measure out to exactly the same volume across different oils. Treat the result as a reference, not a precise measurement.
Dilution chart
| Dilution | 10 ml | 20 ml | 30 ml | 60 ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5% | 1 drop | 3 drops | 4 drops | 8 drops |
| 1% | 3 drops | 6 drops | 9 drops | 18 drops |
| 2% | 6 drops | 12 drops | 18 drops | 36 drops |
| 3% | 9 drops | 18 drops | 27 drops | 54 drops |
| 4% | 12 drops | 24 drops | 36 drops | 72 drops |
| 5% | 15 drops | 30 drops | 45 drops | 90 drops |
Age is a separate constraint
Even with the arithmetic in hand, age remains a constraint in its own right. The recommended range for the same oil can differ several-fold between age groups.
| Age group | Recommended dilution |
|---|---|
| 0 – 3 months | 0.2% or less |
| 3 – 24 months | 0.25% – 0.5% |
| 2 – 6 years | 1% – 2% |
| 6 – 15 years | 1.5% – 3% |
| Adults | 2% – 5% |
Every oil has its own ceiling
Beyond age, individual oils carry stricter ceilings of their own. In the platform's oil library, several oils have a recommended maximum well below the general adult range.
So a safety judgement cannot stop at 'is the total between 2% and 5%'. Each oil in the blend needs its own ceiling and contraindications checked.

Three common misunderstandings
- Treating the drop count as fixed: drops change with volume — only the percentage stays constant.
- Forgetting the oil count: adding more oils does not dilute the blend further, it only splits the same drops.
- Judging by how strong it smells: how intense a blend smells says nothing about its dilution percentage.

Frequently asked questions
Is a millilitre always 20 drops?
No. Twenty drops is a common approximation; the real count depends on the oil's viscosity and the dropper. Results based on it are reference figures.
Is a stronger dilution more effective?
There is no basis for that. Dilution controls concentration. This article makes no comparison of effectiveness and does not recommend exceeding a recommended ceiling.
